Is Gratitude Wanting What You Have?

My Dad Knew
“Gratitude turns what we have into enough.” The quote says Anonymous. My family believed it. My dad carried in his wallet, all his life, a quote that he laminated. It said, “Happiness isn’t having what you want. It’s wanting what you have.”
And I’m very much wanting what I have right now. Thank you to my family and friends. You are truly the wind beneath my wings.
Voltaire said, “Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” That’s how I feel and why I coach people now. I’m filled with gratitude and appreciation for my clients.
Time to Thank
Thank you to my clients – – those who crafted with me a presentation to market your business, or your legacy speech for your TEDx Talk. Thanks for working through the steps of your presentation and being open to suggestions. Thank you for trusting me with your most tender background stories, so we can amplify your voice and your message. Thank you for allowing me to talk straight with you and be your audience. Thank you for allowing me to say “no” to some of your complex stories, and suggest them for “your book” as yet unwritten. And thanks for letting me push you to write that book!
My Man Voltaire
By the way, Voltaire is my man of the moment. In 1759 he wrote “Candide,” the story for right now. It’s the story of a person sheltered, whose optimism is shattered by slow and painful disillusionment. We are going to need many more laws…How do we have hope to go on? The story does end with hope. The musical version is my favorite Leonard Bernstein creation. The song at the finale goes:
“We’re neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We’ll do the best we know.
We’ll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow!”
Chop Our Wood
So keep on keepin’ on, my friends. Tend to your people and environment. Be productive. Remember “The love you take is equal to the love you make.” – John Lennon
