“Everything Was Beautiful At the Ballet”

That’s the title line from a song in the Broadway musical, “A Chorus Line.” I’ve had this song in my head for a week – especially at the gym. During this health crisis, I say, “Everything was healthy at the gym.” And it is. No one is sick at the gym. No coughing, no sniffling, and everyone is six feet away from anyone else. I find it comforting.

The gym was also beautiful 15 years ago, during my own personal health crisis. I went almost every day. There were no sick people there. No one talked about cancer at the gym. In the song, the line is, “I was happy – – at the ballet.” I was and am happy at the gym.

At the gym, there are dispensers of hand sanitizers on the wall every 10 feet. At Zumba class, you are dancing, and the closest person is six feet away. In spin class, you can wipe down the bike before and after use. I have a bike seat, and my towel is draped over the handle bars. If you are not a “gym person” and don’t love dancing or biking in the mirror with a bunch of people (like I do), then go for a run. Ride your own bike. Or take a brisk walk.

We know regular aerobic activity is good for us. It can help you live longer and healthier. According to the Mayo Clinic: “You’ll breathe faster and more deeply. This maximizes the amount of oxygen in your blood. Your heart will beat faster, which increases blood flow to your muscles and back to your lungs.”

Aerobic activity can help you: (Here are my three recent favorites)

1. Ward off viral illnesses

Aerobic exercise activates your immune system. This may leave you less susceptible to minor viral illnesses, such as colds and flu.

2. Boost your mood

Aerobic exercise may ease the gloominess of depression, reduce the tension associated with anxiety and promote relaxation. It can also improve your sleep.

3. Stay active and independent as you age

Aerobic exercise keeps your muscles strong, which can help you maintain mobility as you get older. Exercise can also lower your risk of falls and injuries from falls in older adults. And it can improve your quality of life.
