How Do We Restart?

Shut down. Restart. We can’t just push a button. How do we turn back on? Here’s my process. I call it the 6 M’s. These 6 M’s are my cornerstones to achieve conscious competence. Conscious competence is the awareness of the process that allowed your success, so you can repeat it.

Number 1: Mission. Be clear on your reason for doing what you do. This speaks to the need you fill to make the world a better place. It’s your unique contribution. Mine is, “I help people to find their voice and claim their value with their words.” This is my purpose, my passion. What’s yours? The reason to be clear on your mission is it determines your “to do” list — what you consider worthy of your commitment. It justifies all your discipline and commitment and hard work.

Number 2: Motivate. Leaders motivate themselves even when they don’t feel like it. You need to be the most centered and motivated person in the room to motivate everyone around you.

Number 3: Manage your time. Your time and your energy are your inventory. Be frugal! Use your time wisely to accomplish the goals, based on your mission. Remember Remember Parkinson’s Law: “Work tends to expand to the time allotted to it.” So if you have all afternoon to write the report, it will take you all afternoon. If you have an hour, you will get it done in an hour. This is a law of the Universe.

Number 4: Measure. You don’t learn in the school of hard knocks. You learn after the school of hard knocks, in the cool calm of the post-assessment. So each night, measure your results. How close to your goals did you come? What helped you get there? Resolve to do more of that! What distracted you from your goals? Vow not to do that! This is how I learned not to answer emails in the morning, at the height of my creative energy.

Number 5: Mentor. Be one and have some. A mentor can help “jump start” you. Pick the brains of people who have what you want to have and do what you want to do. Find your role models and your goal models. They can clarify your 6 M’s and cheer you on.

Number 6: Market. Find your voice to claim your value. Know your words are magic and show your personality. Every sentence out of your mouth is a commitment. There’s never anything off the record. So be transparent but take care. And when you need assistance with your perfect pitch, please schedule a complimentary 30-minute clarity call. You will get value, and we will get clear if we are a match to work together.
